Important Notes
- All components, including piston cooling orifices, coolant gallery plugs, and oil gallery plugs, must be removed from the cylinder block before inspection and cleaning.
- Refer to the appropriate service group for removing both external and internal mounted components.
- If cleaning the cylinder block in a hot tank, remove all aluminum parts beforehand, as hot tank solutions can damage or destroy them.
- Remove all serial number plates before cleaning.
Cleaning Procedures
- Clean O-Ring Bores
Use a D17015BR O-ring Bore Cleaning Brush or an equivalent tool to remove all debris from the cylinder liner O-ring bores. - Prepare Cylinder Head Mounting Area
- Remove cylinder head locating dowels if not already done.
- Clean out all threaded holes for the cylinder head mounting cap screws located on the top deck of the cylinder block.
- Use a JDG681 Tap (or an equivalent 9/16-12 UNC-2A tap, approx. 88.9 mm / 3.5 in. long).
- Blow out any remaining debris or fluids with compressed air.
- Thorough Cleaning
Wash the block thoroughly using cleaning solvent, pressure steam, or a hot tank (with aluminum parts removed). - Inspect and Repair Liner Support Flange
- Inspect the liner support flange (C) for burrs.
- If burrs exist, use a small half-moon file to LIGHTLY file them off in a circular motion at approximately a 60° angle.
- Take care not to let the file touch the cylinder block’s top deck (B).
- Avoid excessive filing, as it may damage the flange and lead to improper liner fit.
- Thoroughly clean away all filings after repair.
- Check Counterbore Depth
- Measure the liner flange counterbore depth (A).
- Compare measurements with specifications:
- Specification: 11.913–11.963 mm (0.469–0.471 in.)
- Final Inspection
- Inspect the block for cracks or physical damage.
- If a crack is suspected, perform a pressure test as outlined in the Fundamentals of Service Manual – Engines.
- Replace the cylinder block if cracks or irreparable damage are found.
By following these procedures, the cylinder block of a John Deere PowerTech 9.0 OEM engine can be thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and prepared for reassembly.
