What’s New?
The newly introduced water pumps feature several design and assembly modifications:
✅ New Water Pump Models:
- For 6-cylinder engines
- For 4-cylinder AE engines
Important: The new pumps and old pumps are not interchangeable.
Assembly Procedure Changes
Some steps for dismantling and reassembling the new pumps differ from earlier models.
- Water Seal Installation:
Use the special tool (Tool A, referenced on page 3, operation 21A-03 in the Workshop Manual) to correctly fit the water seal.- Previously, the impeller itself set the seal length.
- Note: The tool’s dimensions remain the same.
Dimensional Adjustments
A key design change is the reduction of the pump’s front-to-rear length by 1.0 mm (0.04 in), due to material being removed from the pump’s front face.
This affects dimension ‘A’ — the distance from the pump’s front face to the front face of the impeller — which is crucial for ensuring proper clearance between the impeller blades and the pump body.
Updated Dimension Specifications
Engine Types | Earlier Pump (Part No.) | Dimension ‘A’ | Latest Pump (Part No.) | Dimension ‘A’ |
---|---|---|---|---|
AA, AB, AC, AD, AE | 4131E007 | 8.1–8.5 mm (0.31–0.33 in) | 4131E012, 4131E008 | 7.1–7.5 mm (0.28–0.30 in) |
YA, YB, YD, YE | 4131E105 | 7.7–8.0 mm (0.30–0.31 in) | 4131E011 | 6.7–7.0 mm (0.26–0.28 in) |
Other Notable Changes
- Setscrew Sealant Update:
The sealant used on the cover’s setscrews has been upgraded, allowing the screws to be reused without applying fresh sealant. - AE Engine Procedure Alignment:
The assembly procedure for AE engines using the latest pump (part no. 4131E008) now matches the process for 6-cylinder (Y series) engines.
→ Refer to operation 21A-03A in the Detroit Diesel Phaser Workshop Manual.
→ This change applies starting from engine number A****U594297W**.
