This article describes the disassembly process for John Deere Engines 3029, 4039, 4045, 6059, 6068 (Saran)-499999CD, including the Eleservice Advisor Electronic Data Link EDL2 Diagnostic Adapter.

1. Engine Disassembly Procedure
2. Follow this recommended procedure for complete disassembly after an overhaul. Refer to the appropriate repair group for detailed procedures for removing individual engine components.
3. Drain the coolant and engine oil.
Check the engine oil for metal contamination (see groups 25 and 30).
4. Remove the V-belt, fan and alternator. See
Group 30.
5. Remove the turbocharger (if equipped) and exhaust manifold.

6. Remove the rocker arm covers with breather tubes.
Take care not to damage the option code label on the rocker arm covers (see group 05).
7. Remove the water manifold with thermostat.
See group 30.
8. Remove the oil cooler lines and water pump.
See groups 25 and 30.
9. Remove the oil dipstick, oil filter and engine oil cooler.
Discard the standard oil cooler if the oil contains metal particles (see group 25).
10. Remove the hydraulic control valve assembly See
Group 25.
11. Remove the fuel filter, fuel feed pump, and fuel lines See
Group 40.
12.Remove the injection lines, injection pump, and injectors See
Group 40.
13. Remove the starter
14. Remove the push rod
in the correct order. Check that the push rod is not bent and that the condition of the rocker arm wear pad contact surfaces is correct (see Group 05).
15. Remove the cylinder head
Check the piston projection and verify the piston height selection (see groups 05 and 10).
16. Remove the cam followers
Note the order in which they are removed (see group 20).
17. Remove the oil pan
See group 25.
18. Remove the flywheel and flywheel housing
See group 15.
19. Remove the crankshaft pulley
See group 15.
20. Remove timing gear cover
See Group 20.
21. Remove oil pump drive gear, outlet pipe (and O-ring in block) and pump body
See Group 25.
22. Remove oil slinger, timing gear and camshaft
Perform wear check (see Group 20).
23. Remove balancer shaft (4 cylinder only, if equipped)
See Group 20.
24. Remove engine front panel
See Group 20.
25. Remove the lubricating oil system bypass valve.
See group 25.
26. Stamp the rods with the cylinder number (if required)
Remove the pistons and rods. Carry out a wear test with “PLASTIGAGE”. For 4 and 6 cylinder engines always remove two at a time (see group 10).
27. Remove the main bearings and crankshaft.
Carry out a wear check with “PLASTIGAGE” (see group 15).
28. Remove the cylinder liners and mark each with the cylinder number removed.

29. Remove the piston cooling holes.
See Groups 10 and 15.
30. Remove the balance shafts and camshaft bushings (if equipped)
See Group 20.
31. Remove the cylinder block plugs and serial number plate (if required)
Place the block in the “hot tank” (see Group 10).
32. Clean the cylinder liners (top and bottom areas) using a nylon brush.

33. Measure the cylinder block.
