Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) – SPN 5580, FMI 18

Event Codes: Low Fuel Pressure / Engine Filtered Fuel Delivery Absolute Pressure Low

Error Codes & Description:

• E198 (2) – Low Fuel Pressure
• 5580-17 / E198(1): Fuel Pressure Low (Code is logged)
• 5580-18 / E198(2): Fuel Pressure Low (Code is logged; Engine power is derated; ECM illuminates action lamp)

Troubleshooting Steps

1) Identify the Code

• Connect Cat Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
• Check if a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is present or logged.

2) Check Fuel Level in the Tank

• Visually inspect the fuel level in the tank. Ensure there is enough fuel for engine operation.
• Ensure the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is fully OPEN.

3) Inspect Fuel System for Leaks

• Perform a visual inspection for leaks in the fuel system.
• Inspect fuel lines from the fuel transfer pump to the secondary fuel filter base for restrictions.
• Note: Cold weather can negatively affect fuel characteristics.

4) Check the Fuel Pressure Sensor

• Record fuel pressure readings using Cat ET and compare with a pressure gauge.

5) Replace Fuel Filters

• Replace the primary, secondary, and tertiary fuel filters.
• Reset all active codes by turning the keyswitch OFF for 2 minutes.

6) Check for Air in the Fuel System

• Inspect the system for any signs of air in the fuel.

7) Replace the Fuel Return Pressure Regulator

• Install a new fuel return pressure regulator.
• Inspect the anti-drain check valve for proper function.

8) Replace the Transfer Pump

• If the issue persists, replace the transfer pump.
