Caterpillar 311F LRR-JFT Crawler Excavator Engine Crankshaft Front Oil Seal – Removal and Installation

This article introduces the removal and installation process for the crankshaft front oil seal of the Caterpillar 311F LRR-JFT Crawler Excavator engine.

Tools Required:

  • Tool (A) for applying grease
  • Tool (B) for removing the oil seal
  • Tool (C) for collecting debris
  • Tool (D) for installing the new oil seal

Preparation:

  1. Remove the Crankshaft Pulley
    • Follow the steps outlined in Disassembly and Assembly, “Crankshaft Pulley – Removing and Installation.”
  2. Safety Precautions
    • When inspecting, maintaining, testing, adjusting, and repairing, ensure all liquids are contained. Prepare a suitable container for liquid collection before opening any chamber or disassembling any liquid-storing part.
    • Dispose of all liquids according to local regulations and instructions.
    • Keep all parts clean and free from impurities to prevent rapid wear and component damage.

Removal Steps:

  1. Apply Grease and Prepare Tool (A)
    • Apply clean grease to tool (A) to prevent debris from entering the engine.
    • Drill three equidistant holes into the front crankshaft oil seal (1).
  2. Remove the Front Oil Seal
    • Use tool (B) to carefully remove the crankshaft front oil seal (1) from the front cover (3) and the crankshaft pulley adapter (2).
    • Rotate tool (B) from one hole to another to ease the removal process.
    • Use tools (C) to collect any debris entering the engine.

Installation Steps:

  1. Ensure Cleanliness
    • Ensure that the crankshaft belt pulley adapter and front cover are clean and free from oil and damage.

  1. Install the New Oil Seal
    • Follow steps 2.a to 2.f using tool (D): a. Position the adapter of tool (D) to the crankshaft belt adapter and bolt. b. Place the new crankshaft front oil seal (1) on the crankshaft, above the adapter. c. Align the oil seal mounting tool of tool (D) with the crankshaft.
      • Note: Ensure the installation tool of tool (D) is parallel to the adapter. d. Install the nuts and washers on the positioning tool. e. Tighten the nuts until the mounting tool drops to the lowest adapter point, installing the crankshaft front oil seal (1) onto the front cover (3) and crankshaft pulley adapter (2). f. Remove tool (D).
  2. Reinstall the Crankshaft Pulley
    • Follow the steps in Disassembly and Assembly, “Crankshaft Pulley – Removing and Installing.”
