How to Remove and Install the Engine Oil Cooler on Perkins 400A/400D Engines

This guide outlines the step-by-step procedure for removing and installing the engine oil cooler on Perkins 400A and 400D engines.

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain Coolant
    • Drain the cooling system coolant into a suitable container.
    • Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual section “Cooling System Coolant – Drain” for detailed steps.
  2. Drain Engine Oil
    • Drain the engine lubricating oil into a suitable container.
    • Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual section “Engine Oil and Filter – Change” for proper guidance.
  3. Remove the Oil Filter Element
    • Use tool (A) to remove the oil filter element (5).
  4. Disconnect Coolant Hose
    • Loosen the hose clamp (2) and disconnect the hose (1).
    • Note: Mark the positions of the coolant inlet and outlet for proper reinstallation.
  5. Remove Oil Cooler Assembly
    • Remove the adapter (4) and detach the oil cooler (3) from the cylinder block.
    • Tip: Mark the orientation of the oil cooler for accurate installation.
  6. Remove O-Ring Seal
    • Remove the O-ring seal (6) from the oil cooler (3).

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect and Clean Components
    • Ensure the oil cooler is clean and undamaged.
    • Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder block thoroughly.
  2. Install New O-Ring Seal
    • Fit a new O-ring seal (6) into the oil cooler (3).
    • Position the oil cooler (3) onto the cylinder block and attach the adapter (4).
    • Tighten the adapter (4) to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
    • Note: Verify that the oil cooler is properly aligned.
  3. Reconnect Coolant Hoses
    • Attach the hoses (1) to the coolant inlet and outlet on the oil cooler (3).
    • Secure the hose clamps (2) tightly.
  4. Install a New Oil Filter Element
    • Replace the old filter with a new oil filter element (5).
  5. Refill the Cooling System
    • Fill the cooling system with coolant to the appropriate level.
    • Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual section “Cooling System Coolant – Filling” for the correct procedure.
  6. Refill the Engine Oil
    • Add engine oil to the oil pan until it reaches the proper level.
    • Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual section “Engine Oil Filter – Replacement” for details.
