This guide explains how to perform a Misfire Detection Test using the CAT ET 2025A diagnostic software on Caterpillar machines. The Misfire Detection function helps identify misfiring cylinders through a graphical display of parameters specific to each cylinder. The parameter used depends on the engine type and which parameter best represents a cylinder misfire.

Accessing the Misfire Detection Function
- Open CAT ET 2025A software.
- From the Diagnostics menu, select Diagnostic Tests.
- Choose Misfire Detection from the submenu.
- The Misfire Detection screen will appear.
Screen Layout
The Misfire Detection screen includes several key areas:
Cylinder Selection Area
- Contains a drop-down list of available cylinder numbers.
- Selecting a new cylinder automatically refreshes the graph to display that cylinder’s data.
Graph Area
- X-axis: Displays time in seconds (default 30-second intervals).
- Y-axis: Displays the selected cylinder’s parameter value.
- The graph automatically centers the trace for easy viewing.
Status Parameter Area
- Displays a list of engine parameters and their current values.
- The parameters shown depend on the engine and operating conditions when detecting a misfire.
- If the data cannot be read, “Unavailable” appears under the parameter name.
Button Functions
- Start/Stop – Click Start after selecting a cylinder to begin the test. The graph will start drawing real-time data.
- Once the test begins, the Start button becomes Stop.
- Clicking Stop freezes the graph display.
- Hold/Resume – Click Hold to pause the graph and inspect parameter values at a specific moment.
- The button changes to Resume, which resumes live graph updates when clicked.
- Settings / Switch Bank – On certain engines, this option lets users toggle between odd and even banks of cylinders (useful for 12- or 16-cylinder engines). The odd bank displays Cylinder #1 by default.
