Electronic Service Tool (EST) Overview

The Electronic Service Tool (EST) is used to establish and manage a data connection between the Service Tool and the Electronic Control Module (ECM) in Perkins engines. This guide outlines the procedure for connecting and disconnecting from the EST.

Connecting to the EST

The Connect function initiates a data connection between the Service Tool and the ECM. This option is available when no active connection exists.

Steps to Connect:

1. Click the Connect icon on the toolbar (if using the default layout), select Connect from the File menu, or press F8.
2. A Connection message box appears, indicating that the Service Tool is attempting to establish a connection.
3. If the connection is successful:
   • If a single ECM is detected, the ECM Summary screen is displayed.
   • If multiple ECMs are found, an ECM selection dialog box appears.
4. If connecting to an ECM for the first time, the system will automatically generate and download a product status report from the ECM.
5. If the Service Tool detects an unsupported ECM, a message is displayed, and the connection is immediately terminated.
6. To cancel an ongoing connection attempt, click the End Connection button in the connection message box. This will disable all functions requiring an active connection, clear the main screen, and update the status bar to Disconnected.

Disconnecting from the EST

The Disconnect function terminates the data connection between the Service Tool and the ECM. This option is available when a connection is active.

Steps to Disconnect:

1. Click the Disconnect icon on the toolbar, select Disconnect from the File menu, or press F8.
2. The Service Tool main screen will appear blank, indicating that the disconnection was successful.

EST Communication Preferences

The Preferences section allows users to configure communication settings for the EST.

Configuration Options:

• Adjust COM port settings and communication adapter baud rate.
• These settings can be modified via the Communications tab in the Service Tool Settings dialog box.
• To access the settings screen, select Settings from the Utilities menu.
