Does the GM MDI2 Support Programming on a 2025 Chevy Traverse

Many technicians have asked whether the GM MDI2 interface can handle diagnostics and module programming on the 2025 Chevy Traverse. Below is a recent case and the explanation behind it.

Issue 1: Programming Prompt Says “MDI2 Required”

A user reported that their tool successfully scanned the vehicle at first. However, when attempting to program a new module on a 2025 Traverse using GM TechConnect, the system displayed a prompt stating that MDI2 is required, even though they were already using an MDI2.

Explanation:

The first thing to verify is whether the vehicle communicates using the CAN FD protocol.

  • If the 2025 Traverse uses CAN FD, and your MDI2 unit does not support CAN FD, programming will not work.

  • If the vehicle does not use CAN FD, then the message is normal. Simply click OK and continue—programming will proceed as expected.

This prompt often appears even when everything is functioning correctly.

Issue 2: TechConnect Displays “MDI” Instead of “MDI2”

Another common concern is seeing “MDI” displayed at the bottom of GM TechConnect instead of “MDI2.”

Explanation:

This is completely normal. The label shown in the software refers only to the driver name, not the actual hardware interface.
The driver is responsible for communication between the software and the device, and the display name does not affect tool performance in any way.

Important Reminder:
Our software works offline only. It cannot be used with an online GM account.
